Easy Class Store Setup: A Step-by-Step Guide

Easy Class Store Setup: A step by step guide

How to Set Up a Class Store That Works! (Updated 2025 Guide)

Keeping students engaged and motivated can be challenging, but my class store has been a game-changer for classroom management! Over the years, I’ve refined my class store system to make it easier for teachers to implement. In this updated guide, I’ll walk you through setting up your own class store, share helpful tips, and link to my YouTube videos, where I explain everything in detail.

Why a Classroom Store Works

A class store is an excellent way to reinforce positive behavior, responsibility, and financial literacy skills. Students earn class currency for following expectations, completing tasks, and making good choices. They can then use their earnings to “buy” rewards from the class store, which keeps them engaged and excited!

Over the years, I’ve seen how a well-organized class store can transform classroom behavior. It’s fun, effective, and gives students a sense of ownership over their choices.

Step-by-Step Guide to Setting Up Your Class Store

1. Decide on Your Class Currency

  • Use printable class dollars, tokens, or digital points.
  • Make it simple and easy to track.

Class Dojo Store

I use Class Dojo as our currency, but you could use anything!  I use it because I don’t have the patience to keep up with paper money! My students “collect” their points for an entire month and then can spend their Class Dojo points in our class store! I only open the store once a month. It’s just too much work to open it more often!

2. Determine How Students Earn and Spend

  • Set clear expectations for earning class currency.
  • Offer a variety of rewards at different price points in the class store.

3. Set Up the Store Display or Platform

  • Choose between a physical or digital store, based on your classroom setup and preferences.

  • Physical Store: To display rewards, use a bulletin board, cabinet, or tabletop area. Label each item with its cost and organize items in bins or shelves.

  • Print the point value on regular colored paper. Then, use Velcro dots to attach the passes that are available for purchase. Due to demand, the Velcro dots make it easy to change the passes around.

  • Keep all the passes in library pockets on the back of a closet door. Color-coordinate them to match the signs on the front and the color used to print the passes. This step is optional but helps on shopping days when students check out.
  • Digital Store: Use tools like Google Slides, Google Sites, or a classroom management app. Students can browse rewards virtually and submit a request form when ready to purchase.

  • This step has saved me a lot of time on class shopping days, and it is the current method I use in my classroom.
  • Whichever method you choose, ensure your store is easily accessible and consistently updated so students stay motivated to earn and shop.

4. Stock Your Class Store

  • Use a mix of tangible and experience-based rewards (more on that below!).
  • Keep it manageable—start small and expand as needed.

5. Schedule Shopping Days

  • Decide how often students can shop at the class store (weekly, biweekly, or monthly).
  • Have a simple system for students to make purchases.

I go into even more detail in my YouTube videos—check them out here:

Reward Ideas for Your Class Store

One of the best parts of having a classroom store is getting creative with rewards! Some of my favorite student-approved rewards include:

  • No Homework Pass
  • Sit with a Friend
  • Teacher’s Chair for a Day
  • Extra Recess
  • Small Trinkets & Stickers
  • Classroom Job Perks

If you need ready-made class store reward coupons, I have a set available that makes setting up your class store even easier!

Common Challenges & Solutions

What if students lose their class currency?

  • Use a digital tracking system or give each student a designated envelope.

How do I keep up with the classroom store without taking too much time?

  • Assign classroom jobs so students can help run the classroom store.

What if students try to cheat the system?

  • Have clear rules and consequences in place.
